He used full color and took his time as he was driving he would periodically look up and check on his siblings and once he knew they were okay he would go back to his work. Waiting for the other to the Finish he was quiet and sat patiently shaded in around his face and colored on the back of this paper as his sister told him to do so.
When we asked him the questions his answers were very logical and well-thought-out. He stated that he put his third eye in the center of his forehead because it looked cool and it made sense. If it was located at the back of his head he wouldn 't be able to see anything because of his hair and if it was located anywhere else on his body it would probably get covered up by clothes or he would not be able to use it. I was slicing the baseball, I felt like the baseballs were angry at me for something that I did.
I was getting frustrated. Nick knowing of my frustration said. Then he swung again and the ball hit what we deemed the home run street. Then it was my turn again. I was filled with a greater hate for baseball than usual by this point. Ryan gave me his pitch, but it seemed too low.
To start off with Reuven and Danny become good friends after Danny nearly blinds Reuven during their intense softball game. Being raised this way Danny has had a very hard time in certain situations because of his lack of communication with his father but he has also grown up being dependent on himself. Danny actually expresses that he admires his father even though he hardly ever talks to him.
Even though he has grown up so separated and almost without a father he still admires him. He himself does not know exactly why but he does. Raising his son in silence has allowed Reb Saunders to show his son to live relying on himself and his religion.
Even though this has helped him, Danny wishes he could bring concerns of his to his father. This silence has almost put Danny into a depressed state leading him to go out and find happiness which might be what his father wants.
The idea of raising a person in silence was in theory away for his son to learn from mistakes and grow in to his own person but in reality it left his son feeling unloved and alone. The idea of being in silence allowed Danny to realize the sadness that was in the world and feel sorry for others and his people. Reb Saunders raised Danny in silence so he could help his people, but it ended up leading Danny to be his own person and want to become a psychologist something Reb did not want him to be.
Raising Danny in silence had its benefits such as being able to empathies with others but it also hurt the father son relationship. Reb Saunders is not correct in his belief that he should raise his son in silence. His son suffered throughout the entirety of the novel as a result of this decision. They never talked except when they were discussing the Torah, a religious book for the Jewish faith. However, his father did not only cause him pain by treating him to silence.
He was allowed the freedoms to follow his own heart and learn what he wanted, which is a decidedly positive effect of his father treating him to absolute silence.
Saunders saw what having a brilliant mind and no soul did to his brother and he also realized that his empathy and compassion came from his father raising him in silence.
Throughout the novel it is shown time and time again that people find themselves and their souls when left with silence. Reuven finds some compassion when left in silence in the hospital after his first discussion with Danny, and realizes that he no longer hates him Potok This idea is what spawned the silence between Reb Saunders and his son, because if compassion is found in small bits of silence, a soul is found in extended times. When Danny Saunders is focused on learning and education and using his abilities, he seems less human, he loses touch with himself.
So, by raising his son in silence Reb Saunders managed to prevent his son from being purely a machine, mechanical and unfeeling, and allowed for him to find his soul, his compassion, and his empathy.
While initially this parenting tactic might apear harsh or like it would inhibit Danny and his father from having a close relationship, Reb Saunders actually does this to help his son prosper. Reb Suanders had great expectations for Danny; for he was to carry on an important tradition and take his fathers place when he came of age. By raising Danny in silence Reb Saunders is preparing Danny for that day. For an early age Reb Saundes understand that Danny has a brilliant mind and that the only way for Danny to be Able to help and understand people is to understand himself.
So even while Danny might not have taken after his father I do feel silence was the best way to raise Danny to some day take over. Perhaps Reb Saunders had experienced neglect as a young man and had to depend on the Master of the Universe for comfort and understanding, and wanted to teach his son the same valuable lesson.
In spite of his difficult upbringing, Danny still went on to pursue a career in psychology through which he would treat troubled and hurting people and exercise the compassion and understanding which Reb Saunders hoped to teach him. On a personal note, this story was painful for me to read because I am a very verbal and word-oriented person, and I give and receive love on a highly verbal basis.
Watching Danny endure the sort of neglect which he did caused me to grieve for him and put Reb Saunders in a negative light in my eyes. When his purpose was revealed at the end of the novel I understood but I could not sympathize with Saunders because of my own appreciation of words and my passionate belief that children must be told that they are loved on a regular basis.
With this thought comes many detriments as well as benefits that Daniel Saunders faced. Starting with the detriment that brought a good friend into his life. The baseball accident to Reb Saunders is seen as a miracle from God, to prevent Danny from becoming a rebel, and providing him of a true friend Potok Going through this novel, there are a handful of times that the readers get to see Danny being emotional, this is a result of the non communication between the father and son; when this character is being described Danny is seen as dull or empty, but when Reb Saunders finally explains to the son his reasoning for silence, tears form Potok Reb Saunders did this out of love for his son, and to raise a strong man who is compassionate was the goal.
Reb Saunders did a great job in raising Danny, and because Danny has shown to have compassion the father allowed Danny to leave the tzaddik, and persure his dreams going off to colleg Potok Reb Saunders ended up making the right decision raising Danny in silence.
Reb Saunders does this in an attempt to ensure that his son learns compassion, empathy, and reliance on God, by making him focus and understand his own suffering Potok It caused Danny a great deal of pain, as he felt forced to hide his true self from his father, feeling that his father was already predisposed to disapprove of him, and try to do things on his own, turning to a stranger when he is out of other options Potok This was very difficult on Danny, and hurt him quite a lot.
The inability to turn to his father left him with feelings of inadequacy, and failure. It even lead him to hurt others, acting viciously at a baseball game because he want to please his father Potok The silence of his father damaged Danny, and did not help the way Reb Saunders wanted it to. This is especially true when it is compared to Reuven Malters and his father. Reuven is guided and helped by his father, and their interactions help him to understand others better, like when he and Danny first become friends Potok This kind of relationship is not healthy and Danny realizes that and defends him anyway.
He was born trapped. Danny knows that he does not want to be like his father, he does not want to carry on the tradition of raising children up in silence because he has not had a good experience with it. Regardless of it all, Danny still respects his father and trusts him. I respect him and trust him completely, which is why I think I can live with his silence Potok The benefits of being raised in silence was the fact that Danny was able to feel empathy towards others and it taught him how he did not want to live his life, and the detriment was that his relationship with his father was a strained one and he hid who he truly was for a long time out of fear of his father.
His belief is validated by the great benefits that it has for both him and his son, Danny. In one instance, the reader can see that his silent treatment was correct when Mr. With this response, the reader can see that Reb Saunders was successful in raising Danny with this practice. Being that Danny was accepted to Columbia, the reader can see that Reb Saunders had success in raising a good child Besides these benefits, the silent practice brings several detriments.
It can make a child feel unloved and lonely, as Danny is seen to sometimes be. He has trouble understanding why his father does this to him. As the novel progresses, Danny slips into an even more distressed state, leaving him terrified of having to face Reb Saunders at the end of the novel.
It hurts to listen to it then. Reb Saunders fulfilled his purpose of teaching Danny how to view the pain of others in raising him in silence, however, it was not without consequences. He only has one desire. Danny is a much better listener than Reuven, as Danny learned to listen through silence. By listening to silence his entire life, Danny has developed the ability to truly listen to people and to care for them blindly and without prejudice. This shows that Danny is very compassionate towards others, and is able to listen well and not let his own feelings towards them blind him, unlike Reuven.
However, despite the benefits of Danny becoming more compassionate and a better listener than others, the detriments of being raised in silence outweigh the benefits. In the novel The Chosen by Chaim Potok, silence seems to be the best parenting method according to Reb Saunders because of how his father raised him, however this theory was a little too extreme because there could have been several different ways to teach his son.
Although there are some benefits, the repercussions weighed a heavy amount. Maybe because that was how Reb Saunders was raised, and to be in line with his religion, it was probably the only way he knew how to raise his son. Communication is vital for everyday life, and Saunders may have just been infringing everything that his father did to his son as a result of what he had to deal with as a child.
Danny may have had some benefits, but the amount of confusion that spewed from this method was not worth the silent treatment. This mental conundrum that Danny was placed in could have been avoided if they tackled the issue at the root of the problem, which was learning how to converse among each other. Danny may have loved his father, but the relationship they had could have been more authentic if they expressed more emotions and thoughts in a vocal way. Reb Saunders believes that this is the best way to raise his son because it was the way he was raised.
This parenting choice made by Reb Saunders was beneficial to Danny in the way that he was able to listen to the silence the way his father believed he should. It has a quality and a dimension all its own. It talks to me sometimes. I feel myself alive in it. It talks. Reb Saunders believed that in order for Danny to become a great rabbi he would have to be able to listen to the silence and he achieved that by raising his son the way that he did. There were many benefits to raising Danny in silence, but there were also repercussions.
When Reb Saunders finally talks to Danny about his decision not to become a rabbi, years of pent up emotions come flooding out. I went over to him and put my hand on his shoulder and felt him trembling and crying. Danny spent years suffering and wondering why his father would not talk to him.
Overall, Reb Saunders raised Danny the only way that he knew how to. There were many benefits, but along with those benefits came repercussions. The extremity of this method had the purpose of preparing his son to inherit the position of tzaddik, and thus to inherit the responsibility of being what is practically the embodiment of compassion for his community.
But despite the truth in these statements, raising a child in that manner is more detrimental than beneficial. It is true that one must experience pain to empathize with the pain of others; however, this pain should not be supplied by a parent. All people are subjugated to pain in their life, without having to deal with the ultimate pain of neglect from their parents.
This pain might have lead Danny to a breaking point in his life — quitting his Jewish faith, disobeying or disrespecting his parents, possibly suicide — if he was not presented with a means of communication: his best friend, Reuven Malter.
Danny tells Reuven of his troubles and is able to talk to him about aspects of his life other than his Talmudic studies, which is the only topic his father will discuss with him. Danny is able to relieve his misery and not turn to resentment by sharing his pain with Reuven. I scream with every bone in my body to get out of it.
My mind cries to get out of it. Although Reb Saunders believed that raising his Danny in silence was the correct way to raise his son, in reality the purpose of raising him did not go as intended. That was his main goal was to have his son have meaning to his life. Themes Motifs Symbols. Important Quotes Explained. Mini Essays Suggested Essay Topics.

Had not Reb Saunders raised Danny in silence, he may not have been looking for a friend, or may not have thrown the ball at Reuven. Danny is up in Reuven's hospital room when he tells him, "Do you know what I don't understand about that ball game?
I don't understand why I wanted to kill you. While Danny doesn't understand, we can conclude that because of the silence Danny's father places between them, Danny has pent up anger or resentment towards him that caused him to throw the ball at Reuven in such a manner.
Silence also created Danny's compassion. Reuven does not exactly want to accept Danny's apology, but when Mr. Malter comes up to visit Reuven's hospital room, he tells Reuven that he should accept the apology because Danny was being sincere.
Because of silence, Danny and his father have the relationship that we see start to show through near the end of the book. We see this relationship bloom when Reb Saunders says, "Today my Daniel is free This is where Reb Saunders finally let Danny go and gives him to the world outside of their religion.
How these characters come to know each other shows us that silence not only acts as a teacher to the characters in this story but as a creator, building the relationships that they will maintain and cherish for years to come.
