Within a number of Hindu traditions Lakshmana is considered to be an avatara, in a secondary form to Rama's main appearance. In some Hindu traditions he is worshipped as an avatar of Shesha. The name may also be written Lakshman or Laxman. Lakshmana is the twin brother of Shatrughna, born in Ayodhya to Sumitra, the second wife of Dasharatha, king of Kosala. Thus, Rama is the eldest, Bharata is the second, Lakshmana is the third, and Shatrughna is the youngest of the four brothers.
Despite being the twin of Shatrughna, Lakshmana is specially attached to Rama, and the duo are inseparable. Thus Lakshman was able to kill him, all thanks to Urmila. But the way the story is presented, especially in the Ram Kathas of South India, is even more interesting. It reminds us how vast and imaginative and provocative the tradition of Ramayana is in India, and how we are often deprived of this variety in our quest for uniformity. As the hymns were being chanted and the crown is brought before Ram, Lakshman started to laugh, startling everyone.
Everyone wondered why was Lakshman laughing: who was he mocking? Every person in the court — Ram and Sita included — was consumed by doubts and guilt, for each was embarrassed of some misdeed in their life. Each one remembered an event in their life, which they were not particularly proud of, and felt Lakshman was laughing at them. I find the irony of the situation hilarious.

Urmila is notable for her unparalleled sacrifice called Urmila Nidra. In Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, there is a temple dedicated to Lakshman and Urmila.
The temple was built in AD by the then ruler Balwant Singh of Bharatpur and is considered as a royal temple by the royal family of Bharatpur State. He persuaded Urmila that her welfare would be a concern in the forest and could hinder his services to his brother. After much persuasion, Urmila reluctantly agreed to stay back contemplating,if she could serve her husband any way possible.
