Should i buy the korg m50

The M3 is the current flagship, as was TrEx in its day. The M50 is a budget knockoff. That much is clear. Now, the M3 is unambiguously superior to the M As for the TrEx, isn't the EDS sound engine superior for the sorts of things that he'd probably need for playing live, esp. Just to muddy the waters a bit, I would advise the OP, if he goes this route, to consider coupling a Korg workstation with a VA from a different company -- just to ensure flexibility. And given what you see in my signature below, it probably won't surprise you to hear me recommend the Blofeld.

Really compliments the Korg sound nicely. I tend to agree with xmlguy for the most part. Maybe they could hold onto the Micron and sell the other stuff to fund the M3. Personally, with the Radias board I don't feel the need for any other VA. I've found it covers most anything I am looking for and then some. I haven't even scratched the surface yet. And that board could be added later as well to the OP. Same for sampling memory. To be fair, I have considered a used M50 myself for gigging so I could leave the M3 at home in the studio and not subject it to traveling.

Thanks for all the great input guys. I was almost sure I was going to make the purchase before, but now I'm taking a few steps back to consider the other alternatives you guys have presented. Both of these work stations are or were top of the line, and they'll definitely stand the test of time. The problem isn't so much as my reluctance to sell my old gear, but the the money that I would need to buy a TrEX or M3. I don't know how much I could get reselling the Casio or the Micron, and I still need the Behringer Amp or some other form of amplification for when I occasionally play live.

The effects pedal can go, but once again, I don't know how much I could make reselling it. I have about dollars right now and if I could make dollars from selling it, but I haven't seen any M3's sold for as low as or less.

And because trEX's are discontinued, they're in even higher demand and I see them at about on eBay. If that's the case, I might as well try and hunt for a M3. Like you guys said, I think it's better to go the extra mile and get the M3 and TrEX, so what I might do is try and sell what I have now during the summer I might still the keyboards for the rest of the school year. I can get a job and then get a little more money then.

Honestly I didnt like the m50 alot. It wasnt bad,but I liked the yamaha and Roland boards so much better. I had the m50 for a week and sold it. I have gotten both of my current boards from forum members here and over at KC.

For ease of imagination, think of the M50 as a strimmed back M3. The superfluous features have been cut away to leave MB of PCMs, patches and combinations covering all the bases.

Special mention must go to an accent on great synth sounds alongside the slightly more mundane impersonations and a full recreation of the classic Korg SG-1 sampling grand piano. And, for when you get creative, there's a superbly ample program slots and combo slots to store your patches and stacks. This is borrowed from the M3 and it's impossible to tell if you're listening to an M3 or an M50 when you rack up both side by side.

The sound is powerful and definitely synthetic, although a GM soundset is onboard, too. For synth strings, leads and basses the M50 excels - all are rich with plenty of movement, with the rest of the soundset serving up a wide gamut of, above all, useable textures.

It's a real welcome change after tapping through endless banks of atmospheres and zap-pow 'show-offs' on other synths. Build-wise, the M50 is amazingly light. Take possession and you'd be forgiven for thinking that they'd forgotten to put one in the box.

While bigger brother the M3 has metal parts visible and even a glimmer of wood at its ends, the '50 isn't so blessed. That said, the plastic used throughout has a nice matt patina think black MacBook and you're bang on and the casing is impossible to flex. And we love the unusual half-open hinge design. With the keyboard flat, the controls tilt upwards at 45 degrees meaning that that touchscreen is at the perfect angle for viewing and prodding.

While the screen is the same size as that of the M3 there's less to press on the M50 due to the reduced number of features on board.

If you see it again it's because something has changed so please set your preferences accordingly. Korg M50 sounds better than the Kronos. Yesterday I played the M50 for the first time and was pretty much blown away by the quality of the sounds and ease of use. It actually sounded a lot better than the Kronos. The M50 seemed more fun and musical in it's simplicity with sounds that were a lot more rich than the Kronos.

The Kronos sounded to me a lot like Korg's plugins which are weak. I didn't play it too long but the synth sounds were very underwhelming. I noticed this with the Oasys too. Radias on the other hand sounds nice, like a real VA. So why didn't they put that into the Kronos? And all that small text on the LCD?

So is this where things are headed? Kind of hope not because my experience with the M50 pretty much re-affirmed my thoughts that most synth plugins sound terrible compared to even basic hardware like the M My Studio. I'm with you Aside from its plasticky chassis, there's not much to complain about. I think the sounds are top-notch, as are the FX, and somehow the display is much easier to read and navigate than the M3 or the Kronos.

I love the plug-in editor and I've made the M50 my master keyboard sitting right in front of my iMac. I don't use aftertouch so this wasn't a drawback for me. A friend of mines girlfriend came to jam once with an M50 in tow and I must admit I was pretty dumbfounded at how good it sounded. Especially Rhodes and piano sounds! I thought some of them were very nice!
